I quite like MELBOURNE airport. Plenty of options for food. Vegan and vegetarian. Not a hike for domestic terminals. Parking can be quite cheap if you book online before entering and even cheaper for long term if youre willing to get the bus to the airport from a car park.
Great for a single flight - but try coming in from overseas and transferring to domestic after customs - it is a nightmare! You leave customs and then try to find a complete lack of signage to domestic bag drop, but then drag your bags over miles, up escalators as the lifts never work - and have to go through the manual bag drop. Take a copy of LAX and have a bag drop IN customs after you clear them and then just drop your bags and go
Had a domestic flight here. Everything working quickly. No problems. Also, I had a shuttle to the airport. But saw a "Sky Bus". So, there should be an easy connection to the city
Poorly designed. Far more difficult than necessary to find where you need to be due to poor or non existent signs. I don't know how foreigners manage. Collecting baggage is also a nightmare. There are narrow spaces between pillars and walls where people wait for baggage while irate staff yell at people to get out of the way. One of these cranky a#$holes even yelled at a young Asian girl to turn her phone off. This is in an area where phones most definitely didn't need to be turned off. Nice welcome to our charming country, eh? Get it together Melbourne airport!A year later and still problems. What is it with power tripping airport workers? I saw a female airport staff member asking someone who clearly didn't speak English a question, repeating it louder each time, as if that would somehow make them understand. Unbelievable.
I am extremely appalled by the disability service and treatment at this airport that my mother experienced when she landed from her flight from Malaysia this morning. While I am sure there are lots of friendly staff around, this is one particular instance I am extremely disappointed with. Firstly, I booked for wheelchair access a few days in advance with the airline as my mother has a limp in leg and is unable to walk very long distances. She had a very friendly and enjoyable experience departing from Malaysia airport and during her flight where she had no issues and was provided with excellent disability services along the whole way to the planeIt was once she landed and departed the plane, she was met by a staff member in her late-40s who approached her asking if she had booked wheelchair access, in which she replied ''yes, with the Malaysia airline.'' She then told her to wait even though there were several free wheelchairs close by. After some time, the lady came back and told her to walk to the end path and wait there. She did not offer to assist with any of her luggage at all.My mum continued waiting around. After some time when no staff member was around to assist her, she had no choice but to walk on her own. Through the kindness of other strangers helping her walk and assist with her luggage along the way, she managed to get out a couple hours later. She was extremely tired and her leg was in pain. I was quite upset after hearing my mum's experience and I am disgusted with the disability services provided by this airport.
